I’ve been chained to the computer for several days and apparently I’ve been neglecting my duties as chief head-scratcher around here. Miss Cleo insisted on face-time today after she came back from her annual spa day at the vets. A bath and nail trim left her unamused but sluffed off the last of the winter hair and gave her silky coat its normal luster. The claw trimming was first rate, much closer than I ever attempt. The furniture should be safe for a few weeks.
Part of her spa treatment included her monthly weigh-in and we were disappointed that the expensive high-protein weight loss food hasn’t made much difference. She’s 3 to 5 pounds overweight, depending upon whose opinion you value (her’s doesn’t count) and this is the year to tackle it.
The vet thought it was funny that I was keeping a food diary for Cleo, said she’d never seen anyone do that before. Since this woman
is so skinny so doesn’t cast a shadow, I’m assuming she’s not intimately familiar with the “bite it/write it” theory so loved by those of us with a little extra shimmy to our shake.
I feed Cleo throughout the day and need help remembering if it’s been 4 Tbsp dry and 3 wet or 6/2 or what. For the last two months, I can tell you how much she’s had of what food each day and the total number of calories. Whether she had treats. If she got caught eating her brother’s food (the cat equivalent of dessert). Each day I added up the calories, then averaged the daily into a weekly total and finally I averaged the weekly total to get a monthly total.
What? Too obsessive you think? Really. Huh. Maybe that’s why the vet was giggling.
In any case, Cleo gets between 225 and 250 calories a day that I know about — again, see the cat dessert above. And the weight hasn’t budged. She’s 8 years old so I don’t expect the weight to come off easily, but after two months there should be some improvement.
The only thing I can think of is I’m not measuring accurately, or she’s managing to sneak more food than I thought.
No weight-loss ribbons for her yet, but we’ll keep on trying until I have a sleek skinny cat again.
