When Mom died a few years ago, there was nobody left to ask “Where are the girls?” and mean my sisters and me; or “What do you suppose those boys are up to now?” referring to my brothers. I’m the youngest and I won’t see 49 again, but to Mom it didn’t matter, we were still the girls. My brother was shocked to realize we were no longer “the kids”. Against our wishes and without our permission, we had instantly become the older generation.
Later the same year, we “kids” were at the family camp along with a crowd of our kids and grandkids. My sisters and I were laughing and talking in the sun after a swim. Two of Mom’s very youngest great-granddaughters were playing near the cabin when one of them peered around the corner, looked for a moment and turned back to her companion to say, “It’s nobody; it’s just those 3 old ladies sitting in the sun.”
Yup, we’re not the girls any more.
But we’re happy that there’s a new boy in the family, born just last week. Logan Ronald is the 14th great-grandchild of Leon and Loretta and they would have been tickled pink to see him arrive. Congratulations to Kara and Gabe on their new arrival.
Here’s hoping that he grows up to hear his grandchildren refer to him as “just the old man sitting in the sun”.
