Earlier this year, inspired by a post from In My Kitchen Garden by Farmgirl Susan I planted a packet of lettuce seeds in one of my patio boxes. Usually I stick with flowers and herbs from starters bought at the farmer’s market or the nursery, but there’s been so much discussion about local foods and growing your own veggies this year that I felt inspired to be part of the action.
I didn’t do much to prepare my tiny garden except pull out early weeds; fluff and level the potting mix left from last year and sow the seeds. I covered them with some more potting mix and watered well.
The seeds were slow to germinate, perhaps because of my lackadaisical efforts or because they get direct sun only about half the day. Still, I got a few side-salad-size harvests from my little patio garden and it’s been fun to watch.
Early May
While I was gone last week we finally got sunshine with temps in the 80′s and the lettuce had a growth spurt. Now it’s taking itself seriously. I’ve been able to harvest a salad every day.
This morning’s lettuce.
Norma is hosting a Garden-Along for those who want the fun of vegetable gardening, but haven’t a clue where to start so I thought I would post my tiny, no-effort-hardly-at-all efforts. If I can do it, so can you!
I may just have to pick up a tomato plant when I hit the nursery tomorrow. Early success is going to my head.

Congratulations! Your lettuce is beautiful! I’m thrilled that I inspired you to plant it, and yes – I think you should definitely pick up a tomato plant (or three or four) at the nursery. Happy Gardening! : )
