After 10 years of knitting I have just about all the tools I need. Plenty of double point needles, circular needles, lace needles, straight needles, cable needles, blunt sewing needles, point protectors, blocking wires, large markers, small markers, coilless safety pins, T-pins, needle gauges, ball winder, crochet hooks, organizers, baskets, bags, McMorran balance, recycled mint tins, scissors, yarn cutter, stitch holders, measuring tapes, magnetic board, zippered plastic bags, highlighters, pencils, pens, stringed paper tags, bobbins, sticky note pads, Eucalan wash, row counters, pom pom makers, swift, sock blockers, sweater stones. Even a small teleioscope for designing multi-colored patterns. And that’s ignoring the books, magazines and patterns both in print and on the computer.
Paraphrasing George Carlin: that’s a lot of stuff.
But that doesn’t mean I’m not a sucker for a new toy now and then. Which is how I fell for Debra’s Garden Needle Gauge Pendant when a knitter brought one to our Tuesday knitting group a few weeks ago. It was lust at first sight.
I try to have a small notions kit that I take when I travel (see recycled mint tin above). Just large enough for markers, point protectors, a cut off measuring tape and a yarn cutter (no scissors on airplanes). But I’ve never had a needle gauge that would fit in my kit. Now I do.
This thing is tiny and shiny, so how could I resist? Only 1-1/2″ x 1-1/4″ around it fits easily in my tin. It measures needle sizes from US 0 through US 17 and comes in multiple colors including black, blue, red, wine, and lavender. Besides being used as a pendant I could attach it to a zipper but I think I’ll tuck mine away for safe keeping. It’s sold in a matching little mesh bag which just adds to the cute factor.
I got mine at my local yarn store, Stitch Knitch in North Kansas City. Terri still had several of them in stock, but I think I need at least one more so if you think you can’t live without one, don’t dilly dally, hie yourself down there and pick out your color. Just leave the lavender one for me.
