It was a lovely day for a wedding on the lake in the middle of the woods. As the fairytale goes, the bride was lovely, the groom was happy, babies fussed and guests cried, and loons called out to the violinist during the ceremony.
And the only one who wore Birkenstocks was the bride (but only after the ceremony).
The weekend in Vermont was marvelous. The weather gods smiled and produced a wedding day that was bright and warm, despite heavy rain the day before and after. We siblings camped in a cabin heated with a wood stove (toasty) and a leaky roof — over the toilet. We kept a community rain hat parked near the commode and tucked the toilet paper under a shelf for keeping dry. With champagne chilling in the refrigerator, there wasn’t much hardship.
If you don’t think you’re plugged into the information society, try going cold turkey for 48 hours. No phone, no Internet, no newspaper, no television, no advertising, no contact with the world. The only thing to worry about was whether the fire in the wood stove would go out before morning and what time breakfast was served. It was a lovely break from reality.
Considering what has happened in the financial markets over the last 3 days, I could use another reality break. It’s hard to not panic. I don’t see the markets gaining much confidence from Our Current Administration bailing out the big guys. I wonder which mega-firm is going to be looking for a handout next.
I do believe that if Our Current Administration is going to use our taxpayer money to rescue these firms they ought to do it with the condition that the CEOs vacate the clause in their contracts that entitles them to massive severance/retirement packages. Why should they walk away with millions when their actions have caused so many to lose their investments, their jobs and their futures? What has happened to accepting personal responsibility? To the captain going down with the ship?
I wonder if these guys can sleep at night or if they feel some iota of shame for what has happened. Somehow I’m thinking what keeps them awake is figuring out how they can blame someone else for the mess.
I hope they get shingles.
Well.
Just had to get that little rant off my chest.
Why yes, I do feel better, thank you for asking.
I think I’ll go knit and pretend I’m still up in the woods. Time enough for reality in the morning.
