Nine Days

Yesterday all of our Barack Obama volunteers bailed on us except two (out of 7) so we only managed to canvass one neighborhood. I guess that’s payback for my gloating on Saturday. I was originally concerned that we wouldn’t have enough data packets for all the volunteers so made arrangements to walk a neighborhood for another team. That didn’t happen. The weather was a factor because even though the sun was out so was the wind and it was miserable.

Still, the weekend results were good and we identified more than 15 new volunteers who want to help out during get out the vote (GOTV). Now to get them all to show up as scheduled.

Today will be a slow day for the campaign with only volunteer recruitment to get done. I’m also scrounging up some county maps so we can mark polling places and staging locations for our drivers on Election Day. We’re having trouble locating a GOTV staging location but I’m confident the campaign will come up with something that will accommodate the team.

On the principle that an army moves on its stomach (I’ll send an Obama bumper sticker or button to the first person who tells me who said that first.) over the last month I’ve provided snacks for the volunteers. When we have an event I bring water and my Goodie Basket for people to share. For our daylong neighborhood team leader (NTL) training two weeks ago (Hmm, I see I didn’t write about that.) I brought a peck of apples and made brownies. I still have quite a junk food stash left so I think I’ll decorate a box and throw everything in together to supplement the meals and snacks the campaign will provide on Election Day. And if there’s time I’ll buy another peck of apples to balance out the junk food.

I plan to spend today and tomorrow cooking because making a meal isn’t going to be a high priority later this week. There’s already a brisket in the oven and a Crockpot chicken dish simmering. I need to get to the grocery store to get ham hocks for split pea soup and the fixings for a meatloaf. With salad and fruit and plenty of good bread we’re all set. Except for desserts for Jack. That may end up being a store bought pumpkin pie.

Campaign contributions come in all forms.
