Seven Days

Phone calling for GOTV volunteers continues this week. Meanwhile, we’ve lost our staging location so we may be working in the middle of a parking lot on Election Day.

Our county had 5 neighborhood teams working the precincts over the past few months. Now that we’re down to the end of the campaign those teams are combining into two “staging locations” for the GOTV effort. Our staging location is working an area that’s mostly residential and we’re having a hard time finding a new headquarters that will accommodate the numbers of people we need over 4 days.

We thought about working out of a supporter’s home but then decided it wasn’t feasible to have hundreds of volunteers coming in and out of a residential neighborhood. I had visions of the neighbors calling the cops because of the traffic. Wouldn’t that have been good for headlines?

A hotel conference room would be perfect but there aren’t any hotels (really) in these precincts so that idea is out. While it’s not my responsibility to find a staging location I can’t help but think about potential sites. Something has to turn up by Saturday or it’s the parking lot for us!

Meanwhile the county Board of Elections finally called tonight to see if I could be a poll worker on Election Day. That was my original plan and I’ve even gone through the training for it. But when they didn’t call to give me an assignment, I decided to work the GOTV campaign. I didn’t want to miss out on being involved in this election and this sounds like it’ll be way more fun anyway.

Does anyone else wonder what George Bush is up to these days? Here we are in the midst of an enormous financial crisis and the most active political season in decades and he’s nowhere to be found. I have visions of him leaving a note on the door of the Oval Office, “I’m upstairs watching the World Series. Call me if you need me. ”

Once the election is over I’ll get back to posting pics and stuff, but right now this is all I have time for.

Go, you! The polls are tightening a little bit — the election cannot come too soon.
