Congratulations to Elizabeth at Trailing Yarn for winning the premiere issue of The Knitter in my little giveaway! Promptly at 5 pm today the random number generator picked Elizabeth’s entry number. Thank you to everyone for brightening up my week with your jokes and links to funny websites. Elizabeth suggested watching Mason-Dixon’s video “Pardon Me, I Didn’t Knit That For You” for those of us humor-impaired due to lingering dull weather. And if you need evidence that Spring is on its way, Elizabeth has flowers in bloom on her site. Your magazine will go out in a few days Elizabeth. Thanks for playing!
Obscure literary reference
I was remiss in not providing the answer to my reference to “Press On Regardless” a couple of posts ago. This is the name of the pickup truck owned by Sue Hubbell who wrote A Book of Bees And How to Keep Them in which she talks about her life as a beekeeper in the Missouri Ozarks in the 1970s. I blame this book for getting me interested in bee keeping, a hobby that I intend to pursue in my dotage. If there are still bees then.
I’ve gone on to enjoy many of her other books including Far Flung Hubbell, On This Hilltop, and A Country Year: Living the Questions . Hubbell is a librarian by training and a superb writer of natural history as well as outstanding at capturing the essence of wherever she lives. If you haven’t discovered her work, I can recommend her completely.
Sunday Supper
Supper tonight will be a little more robust than normal: country style ribs browned in a pan and then baked with onions, apples and sauerkraut. A little brown sugar to balance out the sauerkraut. Probably some mashed potatoes on the side and maybe a green salad. Mince pie for Jack for dessert, a cup of tea and biscotti for me later on. I have developed a passion for biscotti lately and have made 3 or 4 batches since the first of the year. Eventually you’ll get a recipe out of me when I’ve hit one that I really like.
What’s for supper at your place tonight?
Time to go stir the sauerkraut and feed the beasts.

Thanks for the Hubbell recommendation; I love well-written books about people doing stuff on their own. Gardening, beekeeping, self-sufficiency, the subject almost doesn’t matter — I like it all.
I am home alone tonight so dinner will be leftovers from the fridge — maybe diced roast chicken from last week mixed with the leftover sauteed peppers from last night.
I just won that book at a beekeeping meeting last month – just a matter of time until I work my way to it. She is a fabulous author. Should you get serious about starting with bees (which I think you should, now, dotage be dammed), let me know. I’ve been keeping them for years and love to help people get started. We have a hive at Mom and Dad’s and they were sending us hourly reports on them when we first put them there. It’s not nearly as hard as you think it might be AND you get honey at the end of the season.
As for dinner, I made an old standby of kung pao chicken with brown rice and topped with mango that was one day away from the compost bin. Got the recipe from a friend about 10 years ago and still make it frequently. Lots of sherry in the sauce, what’s not to love?
Lovin’ the blog……
