What's for lunch?
It’s been a great year for goldfinches at the feeder. While these 4 were pigging out there were another 3 or 4 zooming around angling for their share. Last year they gave us a pass and left the feeder to woodpeckers and nuthatches. And I saw our first rose breasted grosbeak checking out the buffet a few days ago. Apparently it didn’t meet his taste because he hasn’t been back. I have hopes he’ll reconsider after I add some sunflower seeds to the safflower already out there.
The hummers are back and fighting over their feeder, engaging in acrobatics that are too fast to follow. The chance of getting a picture is slim right now but when the flowers are blooming on the deck and they hover for more than a second I’ll give it a try.
The Canada geese have decided to give it a rest after trashing my pots a second time. They haven’t been around for a couple days but I’ll wait another week before replacing the plants. I’m curious whether the caladiums will come up so I dug down to see if there were any signs they’re sprouting. I found one with a nice healthy shoot so decided to curb my impatience and left the rest alone.
That’s what I got chickadees. Time to go knit.

Goldfinches! I love them. And cardinals and chickadees and nuthatches and orioles and hummers and woodpeckers. Not crows, though.
So pretty! Our neighbors have the “finch buffet,” so we always have lots around. We had a rose breasted grosbeak on our feeder this morning. We thought they were done flying through, but apparently they haven’t all left yet!
Great photo! We’ve got a shrike couple nesting in the backyard that don’t seem upset about the dogs … but the cat – they dive bomb him every time. We’ve also got cardinals, and hummingbirds that think there is something of interest in the garage (I’m hoping it’s not the same one every time, otherwise they are definitely “bird brained”)!
Great photo! I can’t have birdfeeders other than the hummer one since the dogs go after birds in the yard (trying to get them to stop but terriers will be terriers)
