Summer Sunday

gus_sleep

Summer with its heat and humidity arrived this weekend so the cats did what they do best, slept away the hottest part of the day in air conditioned comfort.

I, on the other hand, fought with the wheelbarrow and won, hauled 15 bags of mulch around, fertilized all the pots, transplanted lettuce, stopped to smell the peonies more than once, scratched at the dirt to see what’s happened to the stupid caladiums (caladia?) that are taking forever to sprout, contemplated transplanting the day lilies, decided to put that off until another day; called the u-pick strawberry hotline more than once (still not ready); encouraged the clematis to grow up, not out; made blueberry bran muffins, read the recipe for a cake but didn’t make it, bought cat food and human food, decided between two pairs of sandals, kept the pair that fit better but that aren’t as cute; took a nap, knit, read, wiped the sweat from my brow and showered. I needed it.

Oh, I also went to the farmers’ market and scored beautiful organic spinach, free-range eggs, rhubarb, and a strawberry rhubarb pie. The spinach and pie will be part of Sunday supper. I’m finally going to cook the brook trout the neighbor brought me as a gift for cat sitting. Think I’ll throw some baby potatoes in the oven to roast and dinner’s done.

Tomorrow I’ll put the mulch down, move some annuals around, maybe transplant more lettuce, contemplate those day lilies and the cake recipe again and then see if there’s a spot for me on the floor.

I’m so envious of your flowers and other goodies! I grew up in Kansas, so Vermont spring takes sooooo loooooong….. I should have been more suspicious when we first moved back up here in early June, and the lilacs were just starting to bloom.
That sunbeam does look like a comfy spot. 8)
