Half-inch radish
It’s been a good year for the Wool and Spice Patio Farm. The tomatoes are thriving with lots of little green babies and the cucumbers are experiencing a growth spurt. Can’t wait to see little tiny cucumbers. The radishes were a dud but I’ve decided it’s because I didn’t thin them enough. I pulled most of them a few days ago and the ones I left are already much stronger and bigger.
But the big success has been the lettuce. I planted a spring mix from last year’s seeds which popped up nice and full and I’ve harvested many salads from the bowl. It’s still going strong.
I overplanted the buttercrunch/red leaf mix too and couldn’t stand to throw away or eat the tiny plants when I thinned them. So I’ve got lettuce growing all over the place.
With the tomato plant.
On the back patio among the coleus and begonias.
In the cucumbers.

With the daisies and dill and sweet peas.
In the front window box among the gazinias and vinca vines.
On the lower deck.
And, finally, ingeniously, in the garden itself, among the peonies, spiderwort and cleome.
I may open a stall at the farmers’ market.

Is anyone else’s left eyelid twitching over all the discussion about the next presidential election? It hasn’t even been a year since we had the last election and already the talking heads are speculating about who among the Republicans is going to oppose Barack Obama in 2012. Is this the most important topic they can come up with? Could we maybe spend some time discussing things like, oh, I don’t know, the impact of the economy on Social Security and Medicare, how poorly our education system ranks compared to other countries, the effect of pollution on our health, the state of nursing home and elder care and on and on.
I need to stop watching MSNBC.

I was tweaking my resume this week on the major job-search sites and within a day received three offers for interviews/assistance with recruiters. This immediately made me suspicous but I thought maybe I was being overly cautious. Until I googled a couple of the company names. All of the results came back as known scams/spams similar to this one. My e-mail was word for word what this person received. You’d think they’d at least put a new name on it once in a while.
Ya gotta love the Internet.
I got a call from the temp agency late today. I get to repeat my exciting, fun-filled assignment from a month ago. I can only plead temporary insanity for accepting it. That, and I want a spinning wheel.

I know it’s not really the “responsible, adult” thing to do, but I avoid the news if I can. A little half hour of the local news at night maybe, but I usually want to throw myself off of a tall building if I have FOX or MSNBC or CNN on.
Next year – since I’m finally figuring out the seasons here (fall just turns into spring with no discernible winter – yeah for bunches of salad greens) -I’m having some containers on my deck.
Love that Fun for the Unemployed. I know where most of my day is going today. Thanks!

I’ve enjoyed catching up on your posts! The rocker looks FAB and I love your field trip report! You can’t find any good fudge around here, but the farmer’s market is this weekend, so maybe I’ll get lucky. Or settle for peanut brittle!
I am so jealous of your wealth of greens. I live in a stupid climate.
I think the GOP will do anything for attention. They don’t want to support our President, so they are going to make as much noise as they can talking about the next loser they’ll put up. Since the media doesn’t want to talk about actual issues, it serves the media just fine. Can you tell I don’t watch much tv news?
Just keep thinking about the wheel, honey.

Thanks for the reminder to thin the radishes. I really have a tough time thinning them but I know I’ll be happier with the result if I do. Lots of lettuce is good. Will you be able to find it all?
It’s been a nice coolish spring for the lettuce up here anyway.
I rarely watch TV news and just try to keep up on the internets or radio news.
I hope you can remember where you planted it all! I did co-gardening one year and it was a true test of my memory – which is pretty awful. I’m still finding garlic shoots, years later, mixed in with the peonies. ;o)
Good news on the gardening front! I watch Ice Road Truckers and Dirty Jobs and leave MSNBC (and other talking head shows) to Bill.
