Buzzzzzy spinnnnning

merinotdf09Specs:

Fiber: Merino Top, Baltic Color
Spun: Z twist for singles, S for plies.
Spindle: 1 oz. Golding Ring Spindle
Yardage: 55 yards give or take, 2 ply fingering weight
Weight: 25 grams
WPI: don’t know, haven’t measured it

Purchased at: Yarn Barn, Lawrence, KS

My first finished skein on Team Crankypants for the Tour de Fleece 2009.  This is the first yarn I’ve produced that a) looks and acts like yarn, b) is pretty, and c) has enough yardage to be called a skein. I’ve got 3 more ounces that I’ll spin up to make a pair of fingerless mitts or some other small project.

This was the first merino top I’ve spun and it required more twist than I expected. The yarn kept drifting apart until I got cranky and really twisted it. Worked much better. Still I had some breakage when I was plying so there are a few knots in the thin parts. And I got really frustrated trying to spin it after pre-drafting so in the end I just fluffed it and let it grab the fibers. Not wanting to be accused of being consistent I also spun some from the fold, just for kicks.

But it’s so purty.

Rather than knots, just lay the plies next to each other (over by a 8-12″) and ply the singles one more ply thicker for that short length. You won’t see it in the knitting.

I meant to say “overlap” by 8-12″.

I kinda spit-splice my plies when they break.
    You made pretty!

    Yay!

I’m another spit-slicer. Although, I have been known to overlap for the sake of just getting it done.

Cranky helps with the spinning. Who knew? ;^)

Gorgeous color and I’m impressed that neither Gus nor Cleo tried to help!
