One of the pleasures of the temp assignment that’s ending was meeting Julie, another temp. We clicked during the training sessions when we realized that we had similar people skills (no tolerance for idiots). We don’t have a lot else in common: she’s a personal trainer in her spare time, tall, thin and fashionable. I’m a knitter: short, round and I wear hand knit socks. But we still hit it off.
Unfortunately Julie is moving to Denver in a month so it’ll be a long distance friendship. One day I joked that I could knit a pair of socks faster than the computer was responding. That led to the idea of sending Julie off to Denver with a little something. Since I knit socks at the speed of dirt, I decided worsted weight fingerless mitts might be a better idea.
Behold my first Fetching. I understand why they’ve been so popular (12628! on Ravelry), they knit up fast, there’s no shaping, the ribbing makes them one-size-fits-most and they look harder than they are. The indoors-at-7-am picture doesn’t do justice to the color of the Classic Elite Montera yarn (50% llama, 50% wool). Even though I added extra cables to the wrist and at the fingertips I still used less than a skein of yarn (127 yards). I also decreased in each rib at the fingertips to make them fit better, a modification that was worth ripping back the bind-off to do.
Julie was amazed that someone would knit for her and has mentioned a number of times how much she likes them. I hope she gets some use from them on her walks in the Colorado mountains.
Meanwhile I’ve pulled more Montera from the stash and plan to start a pair of these for me in an eggplant color. Now if I could just remember what needle size I used…..

I like your mods on julie’s Fetching mitts- I think they fit better that way and it eliminates the curl at the top and provides better wrist coverage too. I’m sorry you’re losing a newly found friend so soon geographically speaking.
Lovely! I love my fetchings. I just chose bad yarn the first time around. (malabrio – pills, bleck) I think I’ve made about 4 pair as gifts.
Look… you’re already posting more!
xoxo
What great mitts!
So cute!
