The last red berries

redberries

Whatever these are, I imagine the birds finding them  in the middle of winter and marveling at the feast.

I’ve cleaned the bird feeders after their summer use, bought new seed for the fall and opened the all-you-can-eat buffet for feathered patrons only in its normal location.

And waited.

For nothing.

Not a blue jay.

Not a cardinal.

Not a chickadee.

Not a little brown bird.

Even the squirrels are busy elsewhere.

I’d be feeling snubbed if it wasn’t for a chance remark by the local nature center director who said their feeders haven’t been getting much action either. He put it down to all the abundant food available in the fields this year.

Even our oak has produced a squirrel’s vision of heaven. I’ve been showered with acorns more than once while standing under it. Fortunately they’re small, otherwise I’d need a hard hat to work in the yard.

Off to knitters tonight. I want to start a new project but practicing discipline. Boring.

That does make sense when you remember that your buffet will be open all winter and harvest is only up and running for so long.

My birds were mostly absent today too, I think they know we are getting a dusting of snow tonight. Perhaps they are headed your way?

I had hundreds of grackles moving through my woods fattening themselves up for their migration south. They are a loud bunch.
