We woke to 8 inches of snow this morning. Not freezing rain, not sleet, but thick, heavy, dry snow like I remember from my Vermont childhood. Last night’s winds had blown the snow so one side of the deck might only have 5 inches, but the other would have a drift a foot high. A chore to clean a path to the bird feeders. The back door is frozen shut, I’ll have to walk around the house if I want to clean off that deck.
The plows had already made a sweep through our neighborhood when I went for a walk this morning. Men were out shoveling driveways in preparation for the arrival of guests, too impatient to wait for the snow crew to return. I tracked the stray cat I’ve been feeding and found where he takes refuge from the cold. He’ll need it: the temperatures are supposed to stay frigid for the next several days.
Long enough that the snow will lose it’s charm.
But for now, it’s the best present, a white Christmas.
“Each Christmas I remember
The ones of long ago;
I see our mantelpiece adorned
With stockings in a row.
Each Christmas finds me dreaming
Of days that used to be,
When we hid presents here and there,
For all the family.
Each Christmas I remember
The fragrance in the air,
Of roasting turkey and mince pies
And cookies everywhere.
Each Christmas finds me longing
For Christmases now past,
And I am back in childhood
As long as memories last.”
- Carice Williams, Christmas Past
I hope today brings good memories for you, however you observe the day.

What a beautiful post! I felt I was there with you.
Lovely post.
I hope your entire day was as nice.

I hope you had a Merry Christmas, Diane. Lovely views.
Wish we’d been there! The photo of the ornaments in the snow is gorgeous. Hope you enjoyed your Christmas day. We did – no snow but cold enough for a fire in the fireplace.
