Here are 10 things I like about where I live, sort of a mini-travelogue to Middle Earth. Go see what others have to say about where they live.
- Spring is beautiful here. The Bradford pear, red buds, dogwoods, and magnolia trees all go crazy in April/May and it’s colorful and hopeful.
- There are four distinct seasons and none of them are extreme. Sure we get heat and humidity in the summer but not for months and months (like Florida) and winter’s snow (with the exception of last year) usually melts after a few days.
- I live in a small town near a big city, so I have the best of both situations. Unfortunately our small town has caught the growth bug so it may not last.
- I like that I have pleasant neighbors living on either side, not a minor thing when you live in a town home. And a good friend “across the creek” who shares my gardening chores.
- We get terrific thunderstorms. I like thunder and lightning – as long as I’m high and dry in my living room. The occasional tornado scare adds a little thrill to the summer. Not so little for those who are in their path, but we’ve only come close once. Knock on wood.
- Commuting is generally easy. Traffic jams happen because of construction or accidents, generally not because our roads are overloaded. With the exception of the main road in my town — see #4 above.
- The history here is more Civil War than Revolutionary War. The local college has graves for Civil War soldiers and battles took place all around our area. It’s different from where I grew up.
- I like that I’ve got a great circle of knitting and spinning buds. Like minds.
- I like that I have options when it comes to yarn shops (how could I forget that one?) within 50 miles, including the Yarn Barn in Lawrence, KS.
- It’s in the middle of the country so plane rides to the coasts don’t take all that long. Important when your family is scattered all over.
And that’s the best list I can think of.

Great list!
Great list!

Dale would love to visit that cemetery, I’m sure!
Lovely list, Diane, and stunning zinnia!

Well put, lady!!
Perfect list! I love “the heartland!”
*snif* Now you’ve made me homesick…
I think I miss redbuds most of all.
(When I was a kid, “my” tree was a wonderfully climbable redbud – my brother’s tree was the giant crabapple tree next to it. We could cross back and forth aerially, but had to be sure Mom wasn’t looking since it made her scream and weep to see us up there…)
That’s a good list! I wish we had four seasons; at the most, we have three.
Very inventive, and different than most. No traffic jams? *envy*
