I knew when I saw this week’s topic — ten favorite cocktails/mocktails — that I’d never make it to ten. I drink the same thing over and over.
I don’t think I’ve ever had a martini and the last time I had a Manhattan I was a 17-year-old exchange student in Ecuador. At the welcoming reception they were handing out room-temperature brown drinks, with a maraschino cherry and no ice. They were nasty and I haven’t touched one since.
Let’s be honest here, I seldom order a drink in a restaurant because I think they’re overpriced and don’t always taste that great, so unless I have all the ingredients on hand for something special like a pina colada, I stick with the tried and true.
So, if it’s not wine or champagne or the occasional beer, here’s what I drink:
- Gin and tonic with extra lime. My favorite summer drink.
- Margarita on the rocks. With salt. The best ones taste like fresh limes with a kick.
- In college, we made up a drink where you mix frozen limeade and vodka (or maybe it was gin) in a blender. A little water, a little crushed ice and you have a grown up slushy. You can throw in some strawberries if you’re so inclined. Haven’t had one in years but I remember we didn’t usually need more than one to make the party merry. By the way the drinking age was 18 then, not that it much mattered.
- Non-alcoholic: cranberry juice, club soda and — yes– lime. This is actually more Jack’s favorite, but it is refreshing.
- Bloody Mary made with spicy V-8. When you’re having one of those days, along with cheese and crackers, it can do for dinner.
- An occasional pina colada, because who can resist pineapple and coconut?
- Mojitos, yum.
And that’s it. Yes, I know I’m in a rut.

I think your list is great. I knew this topic might not be great for everyone but I couldn’t come up with anything else!
I completely forgot Margaritas!!!!! I must be unwell;-P
You need to hang out with your niece in the cloisters more often. Cranberry liquoer made on Dec. 1 to be ready for Christmas Eve. Soda syrups to mix with seltzer (and/or vodka): caramelized cream soda syrup, grapefruit or orange. Fresca margaritas. And chocolate mint martinis. Hey, winters are long and the roads are impassable!
You think you’re in a rut? My list would have stopped after
1. Vodka & tonic (which I might have once every couple of years or so. Though I think I had the last one in 2003) and
2. Scotch neat – a wee dram on special holidays (with no mixers and no ice, would this even count as a cocktail?)
Mostly I drink coffee, water, tea, and beer. Talk about a rut…
For you I would recommend a Pearltini (pearl pom vodka) with a splash of cranberry, and pineapple juices with a twist of lime. yum.
btw, you’re way ahead of me on making a list, I’ve never had a Manhattan, but I do like others you’ve listed. oh yeah.
Aren’t we all?? I could put down margarita. Period. Wine, occasional beer, which didn’t count. I just don’t drink much hard stuff.
