The last red berries

Whatever these are, I imagine the birds finding them  in the middle of winter and marveling at the feast. I’ve cleaned the bird feeders after their summer use, bought new seed for the fall and opened the all-you-can-eat buffet for feathered patrons only in its normal location. And waited. For nothing. Not a blue jay. [...]

November comes

I do believe today was the nicest fall day we’ve had this year. It made it to 72 with little wind and lots of sun.  A welcome contrast to the last month of cold and rain. A perfect afternoon to spend doing garden clean-up. I didn’t have the heart to cut back the cleome yet. [...]

The smell of August

The sweet autumn clematis is in full bloom and it’s wonderful. Every spring I cut the clematis down nearly to the ground and string new twine on the 8-foot trellis to give it more room to twist and turn. Then I go up on the deck and string twine from the trellis around the railing [...]

ECF, the tired edition

I don’t know what I’m going to do for blog photos this winter without the garden. This week has pretty well kicked my butt off and tossed it in a corner. Who knew that having to put together a morning routine that allows for all the chores to get done and still get me  to [...]

Eye candy Friday, the garden version

With August’s heat, the garden is shifting gears. The early season flowers and veggies are passed their prime, but the late summer/fall plants are just coming into their own. The cucumber vines, while looking a little beat up, are still producing cucumbers at an alarming rate, next year I’ll plant two seeds instead of three. [...]

Road trip for the soul

Sunday’s water lily photo was taken at Powell Gardens, Kansas City’s botanical garden and home of this bug-eyed lady. I stole my title from them. It’s always a moment of zen to go to Powell and we don’t do it often enough. We ambled through the woodland trail, relaxed in the shade of the water [...]

ECF – evening edition

In memoriam Walter Cronkite I was ten when I saw Walter Cronkite lose his composure announcing the death of President John Kennedy. The idea that he would show emotion was nearly as unsettling as the tragedy in Dallas. All that weekend and through the funeral the next week, I remember him guiding the nation through [...]
